Like most people I know, I’ve never been much of a fan of unwanted hair.

Since puberty hit and I began to grow hair in areas where the sun doesn't shine, I was on a mission to mend the situation to the best of my ability. Puberty is already an awkward moment in life as it stands, so when I was going through my unwanted hair horrors I never even bothered to consult with my mom or any other female in my family for that matter. Instead, I would grab a razor or two out of my mom’s stash and try to handle it myself.

Going into shaving without exactly knowing what I was doing left me with ingrown hairs and painful razor bumps instead of the smooth silky skin that I was longing for. From that time in my life, I definitely developed a hatred for razors.

I’ve always been curious and experimental when it came to beauty and self-care, so when I came across my older sister's Veet hair removal cream in the middle of a scorching hot summer, I absolutely couldn't resist. I secretly tested out the cream in the bathroom to see if this product, which at the time seemed mystical to me, was the answer to all of my problems. Though I was not impressed with the smell that faintly reminded me of getting a relaxer in the hair salon, I was absolutely in awe with how the product easily removed the hair and didn't leave me with horrid razor bumps. I finally understood why the ladies in the Nair commercials were so happy to the point of singing and dancing.

Since the day that I used my older sister’s hair removal cream without her permission, as us younger sisters most often do, me and hair removal cream have been inseparable. Razors are an absolute no for me and I entertain the thought of waxing occasionally but quickly dismiss it.

There are a few reasons why I love hair removal cream and you should too:

1. It's the ultimate do-it-yourself method.

Even though I can use them myself, razors have scarred me for life (no pun intended), and I can’t even fathom the idea of ripping the hair out of my own nether regions. I can slab on hair removal cream pretty easily and go on about my day.

2. Razor bumps and ingrown hairs don't rear their ugly heads.

Need I say more? Razor bumps feel terrible and look even worst. Wax won’t give you razor bumps but it can give you ingrown hairs, which is just as painful if not more painful than razor bumps.

Hair removal cream on the other hand literally just removes hair exposed at the surface.

3. It’s easy on the pockets.

Though razors may in fact be the cheapest option among the three aforementioned methods, hair removal cream is still pretty cost-efficient. For about $5 - $12, depending on how fancy you’d like to get, you can buy a bottle that would last a least a month’s worth of applications (subject to hairiness).

4. It takes little effort and no more than 10 minutes of your time.

When I used razors, I felt like I had to walk on eggshells in order to prevent ingrown hairs and razor bumps. Also, having to schedule a wax appointment a week or two in advance to remove hair that I want gone now never appealed to me. Hair removal cream is always at my disposal and I don't have to do anything but make sure I don't keep it on for longer than 10 minutes.

Since my first time discovering it, the hair removal cream game has upgraded tremendously. Many brands now offer hair removal creams with more tolerable scents than before, formulas that include skin-soothing agents such as aloe and natural oils, and even formulas that can be used while in the shower. Time and time again as I’ve gotten older, I’ve contemplated transitioning to wax but I have yet to grow the lady balls to do so. Hair removal cream has been doing me just fine. A wise (wo)man once said, “If it ain’t broke don't try to fix it,” and that's exactly why I’ll stick to my guns.

Though some people may loathe the smell of hair removal cream, it is a good alternative if you're not looking forward to becoming a slave to wax and want to permanently retire your razor.
