Finding the love of your life can be difficult when you're stuck in quarantine but the good news is, the love of your life might just be waiting for you in your inbox and rap superstar duo Saweetie and Quavo are proof of this fact. In September of 2018, the couple made their relationship public and almost two years later, the couple sat down with GQ to spill the details on exactly how their love story began.
The couple, who had both been smitten by one another long before their first encounter, told the publication that their journey started the way that most relationships in the digital age do: in the DMs.
"I seen her on my Explore page. I was like, 'Damn! Who is this?' So I did my research and I DM her. I was like, 'How she going to call herself icy and she don't talk to me?' So I slid in her DM. I told her, 'You an icy girl, you need a glacier boy.'"
It wasn't long before the two rappers had their first and second dates, which were less than ideal, to say the least, and proved that the third time is truly the charm. Soon, the rappers evolved from strangers to best friends and eventually partners. Quavo told GQ:
"When she talk to me and when we started talking to each other, the Saweetie shit go out the window and the Quavo shit go out the window."
"I give her Quavious. I give her what my mama calls me. I don't let people inside my life, and I let her inside. And she's helping me grow up. She's showing me how to love a woman."
Along with learning to speak each other's love languages, the couple says that communication has been key to making their relationship work. Saweetie explained:
"Growing up I struggled with communication, and he has taught me to be a better communicator. I feel like I'm growing and I'm maturing because of him—not the music, not Saweetie, but Diamonté.… I don't know how I would be as a person if I would have never met him."
Saweetie and Quavo are slowly but surely becoming one of our favorite celebrity couples, proving that Black love is alive and well in these streets and we love to see it.
