3 Women. 3 Weddings. 0 Grooms.
Crazy, we know. But it's real and it's happening.
Texan woman Yasmin Eleby (pictured in the center), who couldn't find a man to tie the knot with, jumped the broom without a groom! The Delta Sigma Theta member and school teacher said that since childhood, she made a promise to herself that she'd be married by the age of 40 and recently, Yasmin made sure she did just that!
However, the newlywed is not alone. It's called sologamy and it's not as uncommon as you think. Sologamy is the act of partaking in a "commitment ceremony" to yourself (since marriage is not recognized by the law or the church... yet). The event is most often attended by family and friends and comes equipped with everything from bridesmaids to a reception- just not an husband!
All the ladies photoed above got married within the past five years, with Yasmin's wedding being the most recent, happening just last week. Here are some of their reasons for making a lifelong commitment of flying solo:
"I was waiting for someone to come along and make me happy. At some point, a friend said, 'Why do you need someone to marry you to be happy? Marry yourself.'" -Nadine Schwiger, married herself at 36"Age 30 is a prime period for me. My work and experience are in good shape, but I[hadn't] found a partner, so what [could] I do?" -Chen Wei-Yuh, married herself at 30.
'I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support that was shown to me during my celebration of love and life.' - Yasmin Eleby, married herself at 40
Interesting! This is like self-love on steroids. When we asked our followers if they'd ever engage in self marriage, here's what you all had to say:
