While Kerry Washington is one of Hollywood’s most famous actresses, thanks to her uber-popular TV show Scandal, she has kept her marriage and family out of the spotlight. Kerry is married to actor and former NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha, and they share two kids together. Asomugha also has a daughter from a previous relationship. The couple has been married for ten years and has maintained a level of silence around their relationship.
But after releasing her memoir Thicker Than Water, where she opens up about the recent shocking revelation that her parents used a sperm donor to have her, the Emmy award-winning actress may be changing her tune. She visited the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, where she dished on her upbringing, relationship with parents, and keeping details about her marriage and kids close to her chest.
“It’s funny because it feels accidental,” she said about her and Nnamdi being private. “I mean, really, I’ve always…I decided at a certain point in my career–I had been in a very public relationship. It was a very public engagement, and when that ended, I was like, I don’t want to give this much information to the press again, and my husband and I were of the same feeling when we met.
“We were very private the whole time we were dating, when we got married, people were like, ‘what? I didn’t even know they knew each other,’” she continued. “And this was at the height of both of our careers. He was like on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and I was on this hit show, and we wound up somehow having this very secret private courting, marriage, it was so beautiful.”
Prior to Nnamdi, Kerry was engaged to actor David Moscow, and she reportedly broke it off to focus more on herself. While she believes in keeping her kids privacy, including not posting them on social media until they are ready to make that decision for themselves, she enjoys sharing her parents on her platforms. “My parents are old enough to make those decisions, so I kinda started posting more with my parents ‘cause I was like, I gotta post something,” she explained. “So I would post my dog, I would post my parents, and I was doing these dad jokes with my dad, and dad became a bit of a celebrity on my Instagram.”
But after learning the family secret, she felt she could no longer go on with her life “perpetuating a lie,” although she was unaware of it until a few years ago. While Kerry admitted that “it’s very new for me to be this open,” it was important for her to be transparent, and it helps her feel less alone, and she hopes her book will do the same for others.
So, does this mean that we will see more of Kerry and her family? We hope so. If not, we respect the privacy, sis.
