Earlier this month, Issa Rae and her team dropped the highly-anticipated teaser and premiere date for her HBO series Insecure, and the streets weren't ready. Well, to be completely honest, fans much like myself have been ready AF for the show's return after its one-year hiatus and Issa is here to give us what we've been waiting on this April. While we still have a few months before it's time to renew our HBO GO accounts, Issa recently sat down for an interview withLos Angeles Magazine to calm your anxieties and confirm that Insecure is OTW, sis.
In the time since we last saw Issa and her beloved mirror b*tch, the 35-year-old actress has literally done everything but chill. Along with securing lead roles in films like Love Birds and The Photograph, Issa also became co-owner of an Inglewood coffee shop, invested in a streaming analytics company, and launched her own record label.
When it comes to business, Issa is minding TF out hers and according to her, it's partially due to her workaholic mentally. She explained:
"I love working. I just do."
Issa, who has recently evolved into a multi-hyphenate hustler before our very eyes, told the publication that her goal is to become the rich auntie she was born to be. According to Issa, if Diddy, Oprah, and Ellen had a love child, it would look a lot like her future self:
"[They] kind of embody the super career that I want. [Ellen's] been authentically herself her entire career, and that's how I want to be as well. She's been great when I've talked to her."
While Issa is grateful for the many bags she's secured since the debut of her TV series four years ago, success has come at a cost for the creative. To whom much is given, much is expected and the actress recently told reporters at the Television Critics Association that there are times she wishes she could go back to a time where she was just a girl with a camera.
"I do long for the days of Season 1, when nobody knew what we were and nobody had expectations."
While there is an immense amount of pressure that comes with creating one of the dopest shows on television right now, that won't stop Issa and her team from hitting us with the heat this spring.
To our delight, Issa also finally spilled a sip (and I mean a sip) of tea when it comes to what to expect in the new season, and according to her, the cast is on schedule to go through some changes. Picking up where season 3 left off, upcoming episodes plan to focus on Issa's new career, a new (possibly long-term) relationship for Molly, and a whole lot of growing (and leveling) up. She explained:
"Issa specifically has quit her job and she's pursuing this passion. Those are some of the things that we're tackling, in addition to the fallout that happens when you're turning 30; the relationships, the friendships that you have to work at in a different way. Some things phase-out."
