Drake is taking the phrase “throw it in the bag” to a whole new level.
The 6 God revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he’s already filling up his future wife’s closet, and with a very hot commodity: Hermès Birkin bags.
While it may seem strange that the Toronto native is out here collecting purses for a wife that doesn’t exist, it’s actually a really smart money move for himself and the woman who ultimately ends up with those bags. Drake is always looking out for ways to increase his assets, and whoever becomes the proud owner to those bags one day is pretty much financially set.
Birkin bags – those high-end purses accessorized by ladies with long pockets – like Beyonce, Kimora Lee Simmons, and Eva Longoria – has a waiting list of up to six years. According to Baghunter.com, a website that buys and sells luxury purses, the waiting list has helped to drive the demand for Birkins.
On top of that, because the bags are special ordered for only special clients of Hermès, they tend to resale for more than their original value, and the price doubles every 10 years. For bags with a minimum retail of nearly $10,000, I’d say that’s a smart investment.
He told The Hollywood Reporter,
There’s very few…tangible things in this world that holds their value, and sort of appreciates as the years go on. So, it was one of those things that I started collecting as well, so I guess the woman that I end up with one day, so I have a fairly vast collection of Hermès to offer somebody at some point in life.
What’s even more interesting? The bag is said to be worth more than gold, and is safer than investing in stocks. Literally.
Harper’s Bazaar reported:
Birkin bags, on the other hand, increased in value by 14.2 percent over the same time period. Gold and stocks can be volatile, increasing and decreasing in value all the time, but the Birkin bag only became more and more valuable over the time period. The value really shot up in 2001, when it increased in value by 25%, but every year has shown an uptick. And just last year , a Birkin bag was sold at auction for a record price of $223,000.
So to the woman who nabs Drizzy, and locks that brother down, girl I want you to know that you hit the jackpot. Twice! While some people are impressed by Drake’s seemingly romantic gesture, others are not. Peep what writer Roxane Gay had to say on Twitter about the “Hotline Bling” singer and his “chivalrous” antics:
